Banded Mongoose from an "alternative" photographic view of Victoria Falls by Chris Worden |

|
A distinguishing
feature of the Banded Mongoose (Mungos mungo) is the distinctive
bands running from the shoulder to the base of the tail. These
diurnal mongooses are gregarious by nature and can be found in large
groups of up to fifty individuals. This photograph was taken at
Victoria Falls Hotel where a small group of ten were foraging for grubs.
They feed largely on insects but will also eat rodents, frogs, snails, scorpions, roots and tubers and will take bird's eggs with relish. They are exceptionally good snake catchers... They generally live in old termite or antbear holes but will on occassion dig their own territorial hideouts - Trish and John have a small family group living under a large pile of firewood at their Lomagundi home in Kariba. They occur in Northern Botswana and Namibia, and in Zambia; in Zimbabwe they can be found in Victoria Falls, the lower Zambezi Valley and the east of the country. |
