Victoria Falls is traditionally photographed from the air or from the Devil's Cataract.  Chris offers some alternative views from the Victoria Falls rainforest and surrounds...

These photographs were taken between 1981 and 1985 when Chris was a Senior Ranger reporting to Steve Edwards (now of Musango) who was then Warden of the Vic Falls Department of National Parks.  Victoria Falls in those days was very different from what it is today - for one it had less than 100 European residents and tourism was a very small feature in Zimbabwe.

Visitors to Victoria Falls in the early 1980's may remember Chris as one of the chief instigators behind "Poacher's Inn" - a veritable den of iniquity...

Chris is now one of our company directors spending about half the year as a Professional Guide on private safaris throughout the region and the rest of the time managing our safari products section, consulting, marketing...and breaking computers!

Chris has over 4000 safari photos in his personal collection - he can be contacted directly on chris@zambezi.co.uk.

Pin cushion, Victoria Falls

Pin Cushion (heamanthus spp.) This attractive bulb springs up in the open areas of the rain forest, especially when the Falls are in flood when the spray is intense, providing the moisture it requires to produce such an eye catching flower.

Death Cap - Victoria Falls

Death Cap (Amanita phalloides) This tasty looking mushroom, occurring in the rain forest at the Falls, is probably the most dangerous living organism in Africa! A small taste can kill a healthy person within  a few hours of symptoms appearing! It is easily confused with the common Field Mushroom. Heed the National Park regulations - don't pick the plants!

Banded Mongoose - Victoria Falls

Banded Mongoose: A gregarious predator, frequently seen on the lawns of the Victoria Falls Hotel, Kingdom and Ilala Lodge, they are constantly foraging for grubs, insects, and will even tackle a Cobra!
Lilac Breasted Roller - Victoria Falls Lilac Breasted Roller : Extremely common resident, both in built up areas and in the bush. Often use telephone lines as a hawking position, from which they pounce on their prey, mostly large insects and small lizards. The flash of blue from their wings, as they perform aerial acrobatic displays, is an unforgettable sight.
Livingstone Lourie - Victoria Falls Livingstone's Lourie (Turaco): Whilst gazing at the Victoria Falls in awe, take a moment to look up into the canopy of the rain forest for one of Africa's most stunning birds. A fruit eater, it constantly hops from branch to branch, where you will get a glimpse of the brilliant scarlet flight feathers.
Bush buck - Victoria Falls Bushbuck: Another frequent visitor to the rain forest, the shy bushbuck ventures out of the forest at dawn and dusk, to browse on herbs growing in the open grassland opposite the Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pot.
