Lone elephant crossing the Zambezi River

Zambezi logo

This elephant was photographed near Mucheni (Mana Pools) on the Zambezi River.

The Zambezi channels are generally not very deep and elephant crossings between Mana Pools and Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park are quite regular.

The deeper waters of Lake Kariba on the Matusadona shoreline, particularly near Bumi offer regular sightings of elephant swimming fully submerged.  An account by Pete Clemence (Kariba resident) of three elephants swimming the breadth of Lake Kariba is well documented.
