Close encounter with an elephant - Mana Pools

Zambezi logo

A typical elephant encounter in one of the channels of the Zambezi River.  As is the case with most older bull elephants this tusker was tolerant and the guide managed the situation appropriately - the elephant continued his stroll onto the island and the canoeists moved on.

These types of encounters in Mana Pools are not unusual - bull elephants regularly wander into camp and will eat from a tree within a few metres of the supper table or a tent - the guides are qualified to deal with these situations and their advice and instructions should be strictly adhered to.

Cow herds and younger bulls are a different story and are treated with a great deal of respect.  Late afternoons in the latter part of the dry season see numerous cow herds coming down to the Zambezi after a day's feeding - this is generally not a good time to be walking on the Mana shoreline...a vehicle or canoe is the preferred mode for game viewing at this time.
