Warmest greetings from "Darkest Devon"!
What a contrast, I’ve just got back to our UK head office in
Devon from a wonderful safari with a real fun group from the USA and
Holland to Botswana and the Victoria Falls.
It’s mid summer there and the rains have broken, offering the
most fantastic landscape and wildlife photography opportunities. The
birds are breeding, the insects are out, calves are dropping and
there is life everywhere!
Back here it’s dark and cold, hopefully I’ll see my first ‘White
Christmas’ when I make the great trek east to celebrate Christmas
with my parents in Sussex!
It’s been a great year for safaris in unusual places and we have
broken ground with our Central African Rainforest trips to see the
Western Lowland Gorilla and Forest Elephants in the Bais, after
having two very successful trips to the Congo ecosystem this
year.
There’s still space on my June 2009 trip to the Cameroun/Central
African Republic, let me know if you're interested, or have friends
that may be keen to experience "The last place on Earth ".
Another fascinating place I’ve rediscovered is
Hwange, Zimbabwe’s largest National Park in the North West, close to
the Victoria Falls.
Although I spent the early 80’s there in National Parks, I
haven’t revisited Hwange for about 5 years and was keen to try and
put all the bad press about poaching in Zimbabwe at bay.
So after my Botswana safari I crossed over the Victoria Falls
Bridge into Zimbabwe, to check out for myself, and of course to see
all my friends I miss so much now being in the UK.
Well I was astounded with the amazing game there, especially
after the rains had broken and the game was dispersed. Hwange still
has the biggest Black Maned Lions around, as well as the huge
Elephant herds, Cheetah, Wild Dogs and tons of Plains game.
In my mind it’s definitely going to be the place to be in
2009, especially as it’s so far removed from all the politics in the
rest of the country and it’s just a short hop from Victoria Falls -
and without ridiculous prices!
I’ll be in Botswana on safari in April/May and off to the Central
Africa Republic/Congo/Cameroun in June, otherwise chained to my
desk, hopefully making everyone's Safari dreams come true!
I hope you and your family have a Peaceful, Merry Christmas and
all the best for 2009.
Warmest regards, Chris.
